Entrepreneurship – Profession of the future

Reflecting on my own journey, I recall the ’90s when entrepreneurship seemed reserved for those with financial security. It was a path I never considered due to its perceived risks. Yet, life had other plans, and I found myself stepping into the world of entrepreneurship, a journey I now fondly refer to as my ‘accidental’ entrepreneurship.

Today, the conditions for entrepreneurs are way better than they were a couple of decades back. An increasing number of professionals and young engineers have been reaching out for advice on starting their ventures. We look at some of the growing trends fostering entrepreneurship and see how they are changing, which makes me feel that this is a Professional choice that many will make.

Financial capital – Addressing the most daunting aspect of entrepreneurship, the availability of capital, it’s crucial to note that the landscape has transformed over the years. The funding avenues have expanded from traditional bank loans and family support to the emergence of PE funds, private venture funds, institutional funds, and government-backed initiatives. While arranging funding remains a challenge, it’s now a manageable one, offering a diverse range of choices.

Business ideas – Humans have never lacked imagination. There have always been more ideas that can be executed. However, the ability to test ideas, exposure to the global landscape, and abundant business models have improved. The potential of these ideas can be rapidly tested and experimented with. The proliferation of these ideas will significantly increase with Gen AI and the acceleration in technological advancement, which are already disrupting established institutions.

Teams – Entrepreneurship is gaining acceptance among the younger generation. Finding like-minded individuals who want to partner with you is becoming easier. The rise of social networks, remote collaborations, remote working, and communication channels makes it easier to collaborate across boundaries. This trend will continue to grow as people find it easier to communicate across cultures due to increasing exposure.

Social environment – The current social environment is becoming more supportive of entrepreneurship. Friends and family understand the stress that comes with being an entrepreneur. An increasing number of organisations are promoting an entrepreneurial mindset. However, the rapidly changing business landscape demands a quicker embrace of entrepreneurship as a fundamental capability. The growing acceptability of gig work, contract jobs, and, most importantly, the increasing number of young entrepreneur icons also contribute to this trend.

However, there are still pitfalls which budding entrepreneurs will need to be cognizant of. In this ever-changing business environment, the importance of individual skill development cannot be overstated. Aspiring entrepreneurs need to equip themselves with self-management, effective collaboration, adaptability, and the ability to pivot. While technological advancements like Gen AI may not provide immediate solutions, honing these skills will undoubtedly pave the way for long-term success, empowering and motivating the audience to take charge of their entrepreneurial journey. Entrepreneurship is here to stay. Some cultures have always been good at creating that environment, but other countries are working towards it, and the pace will increase.
